Australian Dance Review

The Toongabbie Dance Centre offers a large array of dances for the very beginner through to the experienced dedicated dancer. Some of the dances offered in either class situation or individual lessons are: Modern Ballroom
This styles encompasses dances such as Waltz, Tango, Slow Foxtrot, Rhythm Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz and Quickstep. Students can learn these dances by attending the scheduled class or opting to take individual lessons.

Latin American
There are five dances in this style, Samba, Rumba, Cha Cha, Paso Doble and Jive. The majority of these dances can be learnt in our weekly classes or the student may opt to take individual lessons to focus on the particular dance they wish to learn.

Latino
This is more a street, or young persons style loosely related to Latin American dances such as Salsa, Mambo, Meringue and Lambada are included in this style.

New Vogue
This is a uniquely Australian style of dance. All New Vogue dances are sequenced and all dancers irrespective of their level dance the same routine. Dances include Swing Waltz, Gypsy Tap, La Bomba etc. The New Vogue dances are well suited to the older dancer wishing to learn some dancing to dance in the numerous club dances held around the country.

Social Dancing
This is a term used to encompass all the above dances. In a social dance class you will learn a selection of the above dances. Rock ‘n’ Roll is also included in this style at a basic level.

DanceSport
While learning to dance you may hear dancers refer to Dancesport rather than Social or Ballroom Dancing. Dancesport is basically the name given to the competitive side of dance. There are three styles of Dancesport the same as for Social or Ballroom. That is Standard or Modern Ballroom, Latin American and New Vogue. In the competitive section dancers are separated into age groups to ensure fair competition:

  • Juvenile for the Under 13 year old dancers,
  • Junior for Under 16 years,
  • Youth for Under 19 years,
  • Adult for under 35 years,
  • Masters I for the older dancers over the age of 35, and
  • Masters II for the more mature aged dancers over the age of 50.
  • Grand Masters optionally included by many promoters to cater for the growing field of dancers over the age of 65 years who regularly compete in competition.
  • As you can see DanceSport is a sport for all ages and fitness levels.

    Jazz Ballet
This style of dance can be loosely related to Latin dancing, many of the steps used in Jazz Ballet have their origins in the Latin style. Jazz Ballet is an individual dance where a partner is not required; it is an ideal style for ladies to undertake for fitness when they do not wish to attend a partner style class.
